Schaffhausen is the northernmost watchmaking canton in Switzerland, home to IWC Schaffhausen and its industrial-era manufacture on the Rhine. IWC was founded in 1868 by an American engineer, Florentine Ariosto Jones, who chose Schaffhausen for its waterpower rather than its watchmaking tradition, the factory culture reflects this: larger movements, engineer's aesthetic, a focus on durability over decoration. The city otherwise has little watchmaking industry beyond IWC; it is a geographic outlier from the Jurassian and Vallée de Joux clusters to the southwest.
