The Classic Origin Opaline is Laurent Ferrier's most direct statement of what the brand is for: a 40mm dress watch with a double direct impulse escapement, in-house LF 116.01 calibre, and an opaline dial that communicates confidence through restraint. The GPHG award it received is not marketing copy; the judges know what the double direct impulse escapement means technically, and they rewarded it. This is a collector's watch for the collector who has already moved past names.
Laurent Ferrier launched his eponymous brand in Geneva in 2010 after a career at Patek Philippe spanning three decades, including work on the 10-day tourbillon. The LF 116.01 calibre uses a double direct impulse escapement derived from the natural escapement concept, where the balance wheel receives impulse directly on both swings rather than only one. The result is higher efficiency and lower friction than a Swiss lever escapement.
Ferrier's brand has produced roughly 200 to 300 watches per year since launch, all from the Geneva atelier. The Classic Origin is the entry reference in the lineup, which at Laurent Ferrier's level means 40mm, in-house movement, and impeccable finishing.
Laurent Ferrier produces very few watches. Secondary-market availability is structurally limited and buying without a trusted source exposes you to authentication risk that is hard to mitigate without in-person movement examination. The in-house calibre requires service from Laurent Ferrier or a watchmaker with specific training; this is not an ETA-based movement that any competent watchmaker can open.
Price relative to production cost is high, as it should be at this level; buyers expecting value-per-complication comparable to mainstream brands will be disappointed by the math.
