U
Sinn’s German submarine-steel diver line: case material milled from the same X1.NiCrMoCu25-20-5 alloy used in Bundesmarine submarine outer hulls, harder and more corrosion-resistant than the 316L diver-watch standard. The U1 is the family archetype.

Which ref to buy
The U series is Sinn's submarine watch line -- cases machined from submarine steel (U-boat steel), nitrogen-filled to eliminate moisture, and pressure-tested far beyond conventional dive watch requirements. The U1 is the original hard tool; the U2 refines the same formula with a cleaner execution. Both are among the most serious dive watches made at any price.

Sinn U1 -- submarine steel dive watch; the most seriously specified dive watch under $3,000.
- The case for it:
- Case steel from decommissioned German submarines, AR-coated sapphire crystal, nitrogen-filled case to prevent condensation, helium escape valve, 1000m water resistance. The U1 is a genuine extreme tool watch -- the specifications are not marketing. Nothing else at this price comes close to the U1's outright specification.
- Consider instead if:
- The U1 is large (44mm) and chunky -- it reads as a professional instrument, not a versatile daily. Buyers who want dive capability with more wrist-appropriate sizing should look at the 200m version or the Tudor Pelagos.

Sinn U2 -- refined U series with cleaner dial execution and a slightly more wearable character.
- The case for it:
- Same submarine steel and nitrogen technology as the U1, with a dial design and lug treatment that softens the pure tool-watch aggression slightly. The U2 is the answer for buyers who want the U series engineering without the extreme visual weight of the U1.
- Consider instead if:
- The U1 is more iconic and commands better resale recognition. If going to the trouble of owning a submarine-steel Sinn, the U1's more aggressive specification is the more honest statement.
