The Monaco Calibre Heuer 02 is the square chronograph that stopped needing apologies. TAG Heuer finally fitted its own column-wheel flyback movement inside the case in 2019, and the watch earned its price tag for the first time in years.
Jack Heuer and designer Jorg Hysek launched the original Monaco in 1969 as one of the first automatic chronographs, and Steve McQueen wore the ref 1133B on screen in Le Mans two years later. That association made the square blue dial a cultural fixture before most buyers were born. For decades after Heuer became TAG Heuer, the Monaco survived on the strength of that story while running Valjoux and later Sellita-based calibers that critics rightly found hard to justify at the price.
The Calibre Heuer 02, introduced across the Monaco line starting in 2019, replaced the outsourced base with an in-house column-wheel vertical-clutch flyback movement developed entirely by TAG Heuer. The CBL2111.FC6453 in dark blue carries that movement in the original 39mm steel square case with its left-side crown, the configuration unchanged in geometry from the original.
The square case measures 39mm corner to corner but wears larger than that number implies; buyers coming from round watches are frequently surprised by how much wrist presence it commands. Crown placement on the left side is deliberate and historically correct, but it is genuinely awkward to set if you are accustomed to right-side crowns. The blue textile strap on the CBL2111.FC6453 ages and shows wear faster than leather or bracelet alternatives; budget for a replacement strap sooner than you might expect.
Earlier Monaco references running the Calibre 11 (Sellita SW300 base) retail for considerably less and look nearly identical to untrained eyes, so confirm the movement designation before purchasing any Monaco described as "recent." Water resistance is 100m, which is adequate for daily wear but the square case geometry and the crown placement make accidental water exposure a higher risk than with conventional case designs.
New retail sits around $6,500 USD. The grey market typically runs 15 to 20 percent below that for unworn examples, with the blue-dial references holding value better than the black variants. Resale is stable rather than speculative; the Monaco has a consistent collector audience but does not attract the kind of premium flipping that Rolex sport references do.
Condition of the case corners matters more than on round watches because the angular edges show wear and polishing damage very visibly.
The Heuer 02 caliber is a full in-house movement and TAG Heuer service centers have the parts and expertise for it. Full service intervals are typically 5 to 7 years; the flyback function adds mechanical complexity relative to a simple column-wheel chronograph, so do not defer service if you are using the chronograph regularly. Independent watchmakers with experience on column-wheel flyback movements can service the Heuer 02, but parts availability outside the TAG network is limited compared to ETA or Sellita-based predecessors.

Square Monaco case must have sharp corners; Heuer 02 in-house movement must be confirmed through caseback.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| case | Corner sharpness | Sharp 90-degree corners on the square case with no rounding | Softened or rounded corners; any polishing that reduces corner definition |
| caseback | Caliber identity | Heuer 02 column-wheel visible through exhibition caseback; caliber engraving matches Heuer 02 | ETA Valjoux 7750 or clone movement; cam-actuated architecture instead of column-wheel |
| dial | Monaco typography | TAG Heuer and Monaco text in correct font weight and spacing per production spec | Incorrect font weight; blurry or uneven text; sub-dial alignment off-center |
