The Odysseus is the watch that surprised everyone who thought they knew Lange. Steel, automatic, water-resistant to 120 meters: it breaks every pattern the brand had set for itself since its 1994 revival. For buyers who want Lange finishing and movement quality without the platinum or gold price of entry, this is the only path in.
Lange introduced the Odysseus at Watches & Wonders 2019, and the reaction split collectors sharply. Traditionalists saw a brand abandoning its identity; others saw a long-overdue acknowledgment that not every serious collector wants a dress watch. The L155.1 caliber was developed from scratch for this reference, sharing no architecture with Lange's existing movement family.
That decision reflects how seriously Lange treated the project: this is not a repurposed movement dressed in a new case, but a genuine addition to the manufacture's caliber portfolio. Production has remained constrained, and the Odysseus routinely trades at or above retail on the secondary market.
Availability through authorized dealers is tight, and grey market premiums are real and persistent. Buyers hoping to walk into an AD and leave with one will almost certainly be disappointed. The bracelet integrated design means aftermarket strap options are limited compared to most sport watches at this price point.
The 40.5mm case reads smaller on the wrist than sport competitors from Rolex or Patek, which is a feature for some buyers and a drawback for others. Verify the crown and pushers carefully on any pre-owned example: the case is steel and sees more active use than Lange's typical gold references, so wear and damage are more common. Finally, this reference has already gone through one price increase since launch; factor that into any secondary market negotiation.
