Carrera (modern)
The modern TAG Heuer Carrera lineage, descendant of Jack Heuer’s 1963 racing chronograph but a distinct contemporary line. The 2023 Carrera Chronograph 39mm Glassbox is the family’s current archetype, paired with the Heuer 02 in-house chronograph caliber.

Which ref to buy
The modern Carrera line split into two: the Heuer 02-powered 39mm and the ETA Calibre 5-powered date variant. The Heuer 02 is TAG's column-wheel in-house chronograph; the Calibre 5 is a non-chronograph automatic date watch. These serve different buyers -- the chrono is for enthusiasts, the date variant is for people who want a TAG daily wear.

TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 39mm -- the in-house chronograph Carrera, cleaner case and column-wheel movement.
- The case for it:
- The Heuer 02 in the 39mm Carrera is the best modern TAG by movement quality. Column-wheel chronograph, in-house caliber, classic three-register Carrera dial. At 39mm it wears correctly for a traditional racing chronograph. For buyers who want the Carrera as an enthusiast piece, this is the one.
- Consider instead if:
- At the Heuer 02 price point, the Zenith El Primero and the Breitling Navitimer are direct competitors with arguably stronger horological credentials. The TAG name has more mainstream recognition but less purist respect than those alternatives.
- 2Open
TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 -- the ETA-based daily wearer, sensible but not exciting.
- The case for it:
- A clean three-hand date Carrera powered by a reliable ETA 2824 derivative. Practical, well-finished, wears well on a bracelet or strap. A professional daily watch without the complexity or price of the Heuer 02.
- Consider instead if:
- ETA 2824 at TAG Heuer prices is a value question worth asking. Hamilton Jazzmaster and Longines Master use comparable movements for significantly less money. The TAG premium here is brand, not movement.
