Brand history

Successor to GUB, the East-German state watch combine that consolidated the surviving Glashütte makers after WWII; privatised in 1994 and bought by the Swatch Group in 2000.

Established 1994 in Glashütte, Saxony, as the post-reunification re-naming of VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, the East German state-owned conglomerate formed in 1951 by the forced merger of seven historic Glashütte watch firms (the same family of firms that, in the 19th century, included Ferdinand Adolph Lange's house). VEB GUB kept mechanical watchmaking alive in Glashütte through the Cold War while the Western trade pivoted to quartz; after privatization in 1990, Heinz Pfeifer acquired the business in 1994 and rebuilt it under the Glashütte Original name. Swatch Group bought the brand in 2000. The manufacture produces roughly 95% of its components in-house and runs the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking on-site. The catalog leans on the Pano family (the off-center dial with the brand’s signature Panorama date), the Senator dress line, the Sixties retro-1960s line, and the SeaQ dive watch. The honest comparison: Glashütte Original lives in the shadow of A. Lange & Söhne, the other post-reunification Glashütte brand. Lange is the prestige play; Glashütte Original is the value play, comparable manufacturing depth, less brand premium, and the Pano dial layout is genuinely distinctive rather than a Lange knockoff. Worth thinking about if the German Glashütte aesthetic appeals and the Lange premium doesn’t.
