Brand history

Girard-Perregaux traces its origins to Jean-Francois Bautte who began making watches in Geneva in 1791; the modern lineage consolidated under Constant Girard-Perregaux in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1856. The brand is one of the few Swiss independents to design, develop, and produce its own movements entirely in-house, including the GP01800 tourbillon and the GP03300 sport caliber family. Kering (formerly PPR) acquired Girard-Perregaux in 2012; the brand maintains full manufacture independence within that group.

Founded 1791 in La Chaux-de-Fonds (the founding year of the Bautte & Moynier house, from which Girard-Perregaux descends by acquisition); the Girard-Perregaux name dates to 1856 when Constant Girard-Perregaux and Marie Perregaux formally registered the partnership. The brand invented the gold gyromax balance (1971), built the 10,000 vph Microvibrations escapement (1966), and produced the first series of tourbillons with three gold bridges (1860, the Tres Ponts, the bridge architecture still used in the modern Laureato Vert and Tourbillon à Trois Ponts). Kering (luxury goods group) acquired the brand in 2011 and has since invested heavily in the manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Laureato (1975 original, 2016 revival) and the 1966 dress line anchor the current catalog. The honest framing: Girard-Perregaux is deeply under-appreciated relative to its watchmaking pedigree, the three-bridge tourbillon is one of the most historically resonant complications in the Swiss catalog, the manufacture depth is genuine, and the pricing is a step below brands with comparable heritage. The Laureato Steel is one of the strongest value propositions in the CHF 8,000–12,000 tier.
