The Patrimony Self-Winding 40mm is the practical version of Vacheron's most refined dress line, an automatic caliber squeezed into a case so thin it reads as manual-wound at a glance. The micro-rotor is the key move here: it keeps the profile close to the hand-wound variants while giving you the convenience of self-winding. If you want to wear a Patrimony daily without the ritual, this is the ref to consider.
Vacheron introduced the 85180/000R-9166 in 2009 as rose gold with a silver-toned dial, slotting above the manual-wound 81180 in the Patrimony Contemporaine hierarchy. The movement inside is the Calibre 2450 Q6/3, a micro-rotor automatic that Vacheron developed specifically to maintain dress-watch proportions, running at 28,800 vph with a 40-hour power reserve. The case measures 40mm across and sits noticeably closer to 9mm in height than a conventional automatic, though it is measurably thicker than the 7.6mm hand-wound siblings.
White gold variants (reference 85180/000G) carry the same movement with slightly different collector appeal; two-tone and diamond-set iterations also exist but attract a narrower audience. The Patrimony line itself traces back to the 1950s ultra-thin tradition, and the 2450 caliber family is Vacheron's answer to keeping that aesthetic alive with modern wearability.
The micro-rotor is a precision component and any roughness in the winding feel, rattling, or inconsistency in power reserve is a flag worth investigating before purchase. Dial condition is critical: silver dials scratch and develop uneven patina around applied indices, so examine under a loupe rather than trusting photos. Bracelet or strap condition matters more than people expect since the original Vacheron straps are expensive to replace correctly and aftermarket options rarely sit right on the lugs.
Water resistance is minimal at 30 meters, so any history of moisture exposure should disqualify a piece outright. Confirm the case back screws down crisply and that the crystal is free of deep scratches, as Vacheron's sapphire on this ref is flat and shows damage clearly.
