The Legend Diver 36mm is Longines' faithful recreation of its 1960 skin-diver, built around the unusual period feature of an inner rotating bezel controlled by the crown rather than an external rider ring. At 36mm it sits genuinely small on the wrist, which is the point: this is a historically proportioned dive watch for collectors who find modern 42mm divers cartoonish. The L807.24 automatic keeps it honest as an everyday wearer at a price that doesn't require a second mortgage.
Longines introduced the Legend Diver line in 2007 as a direct homage to its ref. 7042 skin-diver from 1960, which carried an internal bezel controlled through the crown to avoid maritime regulation conflicts with external bezels at the time. The current 36mm reference L3.374.4.96.6 with black dial and steel bracelet entered production in 2023 as part of a size rationalization that trimmed earlier 38mm and 42mm variants. Earlier Legend Divers used different movements including the A068/1 ETA base; the 2023 generation standardizes on the in-house L807.24.
Dial variants in the current run include black and dark green, with leather strap and steel bracelet configurations. No ceramic or precious-metal variants exist in the current lineup.
The inner bezel mechanism is the first thing to check: rotate it through a full 360 degrees via the crown and confirm smooth, positive graduation without slipping or grinding. The crown is also the only control for the bezel, so worn crown threads will affect both timekeeping and bezel function simultaneously. Inspect the acrylic-style domed crystal for scratches; it polishes out but some sellers neglect this on otherwise clean examples.
On pre-2023 examples with the ETA-based movement, confirm whether the movement has been swapped or modified, as early service records sometimes show non-Longines parts. The bracelet clasp on steel-bracelet examples has a reputation for modest build quality relative to the case; check for side-play and confirm the diver's extension functions correctly.
