The Tank Americaine is the version of the Tank that was built for a wrist, not a drawing board. Its curved case follows the arm rather than sitting flat against it, which makes it one of the most comfortable rectangular watches to actually wear. The Americaine name reflects the American market's preference for longer, more rectangular proportions when Cartier updated the line in the 1990s.
Nearly thirty years later, it remains the most wearable Tank in the catalog.
Cartier introduced the Tank Americaine in 1989, updating the elongated Tank Cintrée formula with a curved case designed to follow the arc of the wrist. The W2609256 is the steel large automatic reference, running caliber 2671, a modified ETA 2671 base movement with a Cartier-signed rotor. The case length of 52mm is the design's signature: substantial on paper but lighter in practice because the curve distributes weight across more of the wrist.
Production has continued through multiple case revisions, and the current steel large reference represents the mature version of the design. It is offered in steel and gold with both integrated bracelet and leather strap configurations. The bracelet version is the more complex object but the strap version is easier to service independently.
The ETA 2671 base movement should be disclosed clearly; it is a capable movement but buyers expecting an in-house caliber should look at the Tank Must or Tank LC instead. The 34mm transverse case width sounds modest but the 52mm length is substantial, and on a wrist under about 7 inches the overhang can be uncomfortable. Inspect the caseback on any pre-owned example for removal marks, as amateur access to the movement is common on watches with ETA-based calibers and careless handling can damage the case gasket.
Integrated bracelet end-links on the Americaine are Cartier-specific and replacement pieces come at boutique prices; inspect link condition carefully before buying a bracelet example. The curved case makes crystal replacement more involved than a flat rectangular case, so budget for a specialist if the current crystal is scratched.
