Which ref to buy

The standard Superocean is Breitling's entry diver -- no vintage styling, no heritage pretensions, just a functional dive watch with solid specifications. It targets buyers who want the Breitling name on a no-frills tool watch without the price of the Avenger or the styling complexity of the Heritage.

  1. 1

Superocean Automatic 42 -- a competent diver that is honest about what it is.

    The case for it:
Clean execution, 300m water resistance, unidirectional bezel, readable dial. The Tudor-supplied Cal. B17 (MT5612 base) is excellent -- better than most dive movements at this price tier. If you want a reliable, no-drama diver with a quality movement and a recognizable name, this delivers.
    Consider instead if:
The Tudor Pelagos and Seiko Prospex SLA series offer more compelling dive watch stories for the same or less money. The Superocean is a fine watch with a thin identity narrative.
