Presage

Seiko’s mechanical dress line, launched 2016 as the international successor to the SARB and Cocktail Time JDM references. The Presage Cocktail Time, Sharp Edged Series, and Style 60s carry the line’s dressier aesthetic with 4R35 and 6R35 calibers; the higher-spec Arita Porcelain and enamel-dial references step up to specialist craft dials.

Sub-lines

  • The Sharp Edged Series: Asanoha hemp-leaf-pattern dial textures and faceted multi-step cases. SPB169 (blue) and SPB167 (green) are the 39mm references; the line trades on dress-watch aesthetics with the 6R35 caliber underneath.

Which ref to buy

The Presage is Seiko's dress/fashion automatic line -- characterized by Japanese lacquer dials, enamel treatments, and dial textures that reference traditional craft. The Cocktail Time series uses domed crystals and layered dials that create a depth of color unmatched at the price point.

  1. 1

Presage Cocktail Time "Mockingbird" SRPE17 -- the Presage that best demonstrates what Seiko dial craft looks like at this price.

    The case for it:
Cal. 4R35, automatic, 40.5mm, blue/violet layered cocktail dial with domed mineral crystal. The SRPE17 is the Presage that consistently appears in "best watches under $400" lists, and for good reason. The layered dial creates a sense of depth that significantly outperforms the price point. The domed crystal is the correct lens for this kind of dial.
    Consider instead if:
The 4R35 movement does not hack (no seconds-hacking for setting) and does not wind manually. These are known limitations of Seiko's entry automatic caliber.

  2. 2

Presage Sharp Edged SPB169 -- the architectural Presage, faceted dial inspired by Japanese kiriko glasswork.

    The case for it:
Cal. 6R35, automatic (manual-wind, hacking), 40.2mm, faceted green dial. The Sharp Edged series is a step up in movement (6R35 adds manual winding and hacking), case finishing, and dial quality from the standard Presage. The geometric faceted dial is unlike anything else at the price.
    Consider instead if:
The Sharp Edged pricing approaches the lower tier of Swiss watches. At this price the comparison set widens and the Seiko advantage narrows somewhat.

  3. 3

Presage Style 60s SRPK15 -- retro-inspired with vintage Seiko design language.

    The case for it:
Cal. 4R35, 38mm, vintage-inspired dial with applied indices, steel case and bracelet. The Style 60s is the entry-point Presage for buyers attracted to the vintage Seiko aesthetic without vintage prices or condition risk.
    Consider instead if:
The Cocktail Time and Sharp Edged series offer more technically interesting dials. The Style 60s is primarily an aesthetic choice.
