5 Sports

Seiko’s long-running entry-mechanical line: the original Seiko 5 launched in 1963 as the brand’s "5 essentials" (automatic, day-and-date, water-resistant, recessed crown, durable case + bracelet). The modern 5 Sports relaunch (2019) carries the 4R36 caliber and a SKX-style case at the brand’s most-accessible mechanical price band.

Which ref to buy

The relaunched Seiko 5 Sports (2019 onward) corrected what was wrong with the old line: sapphire crystal, better finishing, and a case design that actually looks intentional. The SBSA series uses the 4R36 movement with day/date. It is the most affordable point of entry into a real automatic watch from a major manufacturer.

  1. 1

Seiko 5 Sports SBSA001 -- the best-value automatic on the market at its price.

    The case for it:
Sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, day/date, automatic movement, properly designed case and dial -- all under $300. No other manufacturer delivers this package at this price. The SBSA001 is the one to start with: the black dial and steel bracelet have no weak points.
    Consider instead if:
The 4R36 movement is not COSC and the hand-winding is stiff. The bracelet clasp is the thinnest part of the value proposition. At $250-300 there is no better automatic watch, but buyers with $400 to spend should look at the SARB or Presage tier.
