Series 3

Roger Smith's third reference, introducing the brand's sector-dial design vocabulary: individual sub-registers replace the unified single-hand layout of the Series 1 and 2. Hand-wound, co-axial escapement, made by Smith and his small Isle of Man team at the same rate as the other series -- approximately 10 watches per year across all lines.

Year introduced: 20121 reference

Which ref to buy

The Series 3 features an open dial design showing the dial construction and hand-made finishing. Hand-wound.

  1. 1

Series 3 -- open-dial hand-wound, the RWS reference for buyers who want to see the construction.

    The case for it:
The open dial exposes the handmade finishing and dial architecture in a way closed dials do not. For collectors who understand what they are seeing, it is the most honest expression of the craft.
    Consider instead if:
Open dials require more careful handling -- the movement decoration is exposed to atmospheric variation. The Series 2 frosted dial is more protected and equally beautiful.
