The Hublot Spirit of Big Bang | family history
The Spirit of Big Bang takes the Big Bang's material vocabulary and in-house movement and reshapes the case into a tonneau geometry. The result is more architectural than the round Big Bang and more legible as a design statement. The UNICO flyback chronograph is the movement of choice in most Spirit references.
A tonneau-shaped variant of the Big Bang platform, first introduced in 2014. The angular case and barrel geometry read as more architectural than the round Big Bang. Houses the in-house UNICO flyback chronograph.
2014 · Launch and tonneau architecture
Hublot introduced the Spirit of Big Bang as a geometric alternative within the Big Bang platform. The tonneau case shape is a deliberate departure from the Big Bang's round form, and the barrel geometry gives the Spirit a more-architectural presence. Case materials follow the Big Bang's palette: titanium, carbon fiber, ceramic, king gold.

2014-present · UNICO flyback chronograph
The primary Spirit references carry the HUB1242 UNICO flyback chronograph, an in-house caliber developed by Hublot. The UNICO is a column-wheel flyback with a horizontal clutch, visible through the skeletonized dial. In the Spirit's tonneau case, the movement architecture and the case architecture read as a unified object.
How to read this family
What to consider before buying a Hublot Spirit of Big Bang.
- Is the UNICO a serious manufacture movement? Yes. Hublot developed the UNICO in-house and it is a genuine column-wheel flyback chronograph. It is not in the same tier as the Patek CH 29-535 PS or the Lange L001.1, but it is a serious manufacture caliber with proper flyback function. The visible movement through the skeleton dial adds a legitimate display element rather than a purely cosmetic one.
- How does the Spirit differ from the Big Bang in wear? The tonneau case distributes the 45mm diameter differently on the wrist than a round case of equivalent size. Many wearers find the Spirit more comfortable, as the case follows the wrist curvature more naturally. The visual identity is also more distinctive; the Spirit reads less generically as a large watch than the round Big Bang.
- Is Hublot's resale market strong? Hublot's pre-owned market is healthy but not exceptional. The brand's retail volume and broad distribution mean pre-owned examples are readily available. Value retention is moderate for standard references; limited editions in unusual materials hold better. Buy for wearing, not investment.
