The Hermes Cape Cod | family history
The Cape Cod is Hermes's best-selling watch design: a square dial housed in a rectangular case, with a double-wrap leather strap that functions simultaneously as bracelet and watch band. Henri d'Origny designed it in 1991 for Hermes's Cape Cod equestrian season. The design is immediately recognizable and has remained in continuous production since its introduction.
Designed by Henri d'Origny in 1991, the Cape Cod's distinctive H-shaped case is named for a sailing knot rather than the American cape. The automatic version uses the in-house H1837 caliber, one of Hermes' earliest manufacture movements.
1991 · Design and launch
D'Origny designed the Cape Cod with a specific wearing proposition: the double-tour leather strap wraps twice around the wrist, making the watch and bracelet a unified object. The square-in-rectangle case was a geometric solution to the problem of integrating a watch into a jewelry bracelet without forcing either element to compromise. The original was quartz; the form has since accommodated both quartz and mechanical movements.

1991-present · Continuous production and mechanical editions
The Cape Cod has run continuously since 1991 with seasonal dial and strap variations. Mechanical editions appear regularly, typically carrying procured automatic calibers. The Cape Cod TGM (grande modele) is the largest reference and the one most likely to carry a mechanical movement. Grail Atlas currently tracks one Cape Cod mechanical reference.
How to read this family
What to consider before buying a Hermes Cape Cod.
- Is the Cape Cod a watch or a bracelet? Both, intentionally. D'Origny designed it to serve both functions simultaneously. For buyers who want a distinct timekeeping object that also functions as a jewelry piece, the Cape Cod resolves that tension better than most alternatives. For buyers who want only a watch, the Arceau or Slim d'Hermes is a better fit.
- Does it hold value? Better than most fashion watches, not as well as Patek or Rolex. Hermes brand equity is real and sustained by the luxury goods business. The watches track the brand's overall positioning. Pre-owned Cape Cods in good condition hold reasonable value; limited editions and precious-metal references retain more.

Which ref to buy
The Cape Cod is Hermes's square-on-rectangular-bracelet watch -- a square case on a double-tour leather wrap strap or chain bracelet. Quartz or automatic movement depending on size. The design references the chain and stirrup heritage of the brand.

Cape Cod Medium -- square case on rectangular bracelet, the most recognizably Hermes watch design, purely a fashion purchase.
- The case for it:
- The Cape Cod double-tour strap wrap is immediately recognizable as Hermes. If the goal is a Hermes watch that reads as Hermes to observers, this is the right reference. The bracelet design is distinctive.
- Consider instead if:
- Quartz movement in the medium size, fashion brand premium, weak secondary market. The Cape Cod is a luxury fashion accessory, not a watch collector purchase. Buyers who evaluate watches on movement quality should look elsewhere.
