The CVDK Real Moon Joure | family history
The Real Moon Joure is the watch that made Christiaan van der Klaauw's reputation accessible. The three-dimensional rotating sphere moon display, accurate to one day in 11,000 years, is executed in the brand's atelier in Joure, Netherlands. The CVDK7382 automatic caliber with 96-hour power reserve powers it in a steel case under 40mm.
CVDK’s defining moon-phase line: a hand-built three-dimensional moon display accurate to one day in 11,000 years, widely cited as the most precise mechanical lunar mechanism in production. The 40mm case sits above the CVDK7382 automatic caliber with 96 hours of reserve; the Joure name preserves the brand’s founding town.
2014 · Real Moon Joure launch
CVDK launched the Real Moon Joure in 2014 as the brand's most-produced moon-phase reference. The spherical moon is hand-painted to match the actual craters and maria of the lunar surface; a small aperture at the top of the dial reveals the illuminated hemisphere. The mechanism requires a correction of one day every 11,000 years, compared to the standard moon-phase display's correction of one day every 2.5 years.
How to read this family
Two honest questions for any Real Moon Joure buyer:
- CVDK or Patek Philippe for a moon-phase? The Patek ref. 5119 and 5396 carry the most-recognized moon-phase displays and the strongest secondary-market value. The CVDK Real Moon Joure offers a three-dimensional sphere that is technically more accurate and visually more dramatic. If the complication itself is the reason you are buying, the CVDK is the more interesting object. If brand recognition and resale are priorities, Patek holds better.
- Is CVDK a known brand at resale? CVDK has a small but devoted following. Secondary market is thin, which means patience is required when selling. Buy it because you want to own it, not as a store of value.
