The Citizen Tsuyosa | family history
The Tsuyosa (meaning "strong" in Japanese) was Citizen's first globally-launched mainstream mechanical automatic. NH8390-based movement, 100m water resistance, and a palette of colorful dials that positioned it directly against the Seiko 5 Sports in the sub-$200 accessible-mechanical market. A genuine Citizen mechanical at a price that changes the accessible-watch conversation.
Citizen’s first globally-launched mainstream mechanical automatic, name means "strength." 40mm steel, Miyota NH35-based calibre, sapphire crystal, at the ~$300 entry price. The watch that proved Citizen could play in the mechanical market alongside Seiko 5 Sports.
2021 · Tsuyosa global launch
Citizen launched the Tsuyosa globally in 2021, targeting the accessible mechanical market that Seiko had largely owned with the 5 Sports. The NB1040 is the catalog reference: 40mm case, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, 100m WR, and the NH8390 automatic movement. Dial options span blue, green, black, and silver. At under $200, the sapphire crystal alone differentiates it from competitors at the same price.
How to read this family
Two honest questions for any Tsuyosa buyer:
- Tsuyosa or Seiko 5 Sports? The Seiko 5 Sports has more variant options and a longer collector track record. The Tsuyosa has a sapphire crystal at a similar price point. Both use NH-family movements. For pure specification per dollar, the Tsuyosa edges ahead. For variety and the Seiko brand recognition, the 5 Sports is the more established choice.
- Is the NH8390 a good movement? The NH8390 (a Seiko-produced movement used by multiple brands including Citizen under license) is a reliable 3Hz automatic with 42-hour power reserve. It is not COSC-certified and will run at plus or minus 10 to 20 seconds per day out of the box. For a sub-$200 watch, this is entirely appropriate.

Tsuyosa NB1040 -- affordable automatic direct competitor to Seiko 5, sapphire crystal included.
- The case for it:
- The Tsuyosa includes a sapphire crystal where the Seiko 5 uses mineral glass. At the same price point, that is a meaningful materials advantage. The Miyota 8215 is a robust and well-supported movement. Bold colorways are executed well.
- Consider instead if:
- The Seiko 5 Sports has deeper brand recognition and a stronger secondary market in the collector community. The Tsuyosa is a technically competitive watch that has not yet built equivalent community cachet.
