Tutima Glashütte

Brand history

Originated in the pre-war Glashütte cluster as UROFA, the rohwerke (movement) supplier; the brand was rebuilt in West Germany after the war and returned to Glashütte in 2011 after reunification settled supply chains.

Founded 1927 in Glashütte, Saxony, by Ernst Kurtz; the name derives from the Latin "tutima" (protection, safety). Tutima produced precision instruments for the German air force in the 1930s and 1940s and is one of the few German manufacturers with both verifiable Luftwaffe production provenance and continuous Glashütte manufacturing. The postwar brand was reconstituted in West Germany and now operates in Glashütte again. The Grand Flieger, a 45mm pilot chronograph with a Sellita-based Tutima-modified caliber, is the modern anchor. Tutima occupies a distinct niche: genuine Glashütte manufacture credentials, genuine WWII pilot-watch provenance, at CHF 1,500–2,500 prices below the Swiss pilot-watch brands (IWC, Breitling). The honest buyer's note: the provenance is real and the finishing is Glashütte-standard; the brand is undervalued relative to its backstory.
