Brand history

Originally founded 1822 by Carl Suchy (born 1796) as a clock manufacture in Prague; the family business grew across the Habsburg empire, serving the Austro-Hungarian imperial court and operating a pocket-watch factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds from 1849. The house closed in 1918 with the empire’s dissolution and lay dormant for nearly a century. Revived 2017 in Vienna by Robert Punkenhofer in collaboration with AHCI member Marc Jenni; the Waltz No. 1, a 41mm Vaucher-micro-rotor automatic with a dial inspired by Adolf Loos’s fin-de-siècle Vienna interiors, is the line’s defining reference. Production is in the low hundreds per year.

Originally founded 1822 by Carl Suchy (b. 1796) as a clock manufacture in Prague, then capital of the Bohemian crown lands of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The business grew under Suchy and his sons into one of the imperial-court suppliers of the Habsburg monarchy, with a pocket-watch factory opened in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1849, making Carl Suchy & Söhne one of the early Austrian-Swiss watchmaking links. The house closed in 1918 with the empire's dissolution and lay dormant for nearly a century. Revived 2017 in Vienna by Robert Punkenhofer in collaboration with AHCI member Marc Jenni; the first reference, the Waltz No. 1, is a 41mm Vaucher VMF 5401 micro-rotor automatic with a bowl-shaped dial whose vertical-and-perpendicular grooves were drawn from Adolf Loos's fin-de-siècle Vienna interior work. Annual production is in the low hundreds across a deliberately small catalog. The buyer's reality: this is a revival brand with a real historical name and a thoughtful design lineage, but no in-house movement and no continuous manufacturing tradition, what you are buying is an Austrian design house putting a Vaucher caliber inside a Vienna-themed case. If the imperial-Vienna story and the Loos-derived dial resonate, the watch delivers; if you want the same money to buy more mechanical depth, Lange, Glashütte Original, and the indie Swiss makers offer it. The only Austria-based haute-horlogerie brand currently in the catalog alongside Habring², which sits at a different price tier.
