Brand history

Abraham-Louis Breguet founded the brand in Paris in 1775; the modern manufacture is in L’Abbaye in the Vallee de Joux, acquired by the Swatch Group in 1999.

Founded 1775 in Paris by Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747–1823), widely considered the most important watchmaker in history. Breguet invented the tourbillon (1801), the self-winding mechanism (1780, the "perpetuelle"), the Breguet overcoil hairspring, the Breguet spring (an early shock-absorber), the pare-chute anti-shock device, and the engine-turned "guilloché" dial technique that bears the brand's name colloquially. He supplied Napoleon, Marie Antoinette, King George III, and the Imperial Russian court. After his death the house passed through various ownership groups and was ultimately acquired by Swatch Group in 1999. The modern brand carries the historical name at luxury prices (CHF 10,000–100,000+) with movements of genuine horological depth. The honest assessment: the historical Breguet and the modern Swatch-Group Breguet share a name and considerable archive pride, the movements are very good, the finishing is top-tier within Swatch Group, but collectors debate how much of the founding genius survives in a brand run by a global conglomerate.
