Baume & Mercier
Brand history
Founded 1830 in Les Bois (Swiss Jura) by Louis-Victor and Celestin Baume. One of the oldest continuously operating Swiss brands. Richemont Group acquired Baume & Mercier in 1988; now operates from Plan-les-Ouates (Geneva). The Clifton Baumatic (2018) introduced the in-house BM13-1975A movement with silicon balance spring and 120-hour power reserve, genuine manufacture credentials at accessible Richemont-entry pricing.
Founded 1830 in Les Bois, Jura, by the Baume brothers as a watch dealership; the "Baume & Mercier" name was adopted in 1918 upon the founding partner of the Geneva retail operation joining the firm. The brand was acquired by Richemont in 1988. Baume & Mercier occupies the entry-to-mid luxury tier of the Richemont portfolio, below Cartier, IWC, and Jaeger-LeCoultre, and targeted at buyers making their first or second fine-watch purchase. The Clifton (rounded dress watch) and Riviera (integrated bracelet sport-dress) carry the modern catalog. The brand uses ETA- and Sellita-based movements with relatively minimal in-house finishing; it competes on design and brand association rather than movement depth, which is an honest positioning for the price point.
